Beyond Academics
At The Riviera Ridge School, there’s the academic curriculum, and then there’s an eclectic array of programs that exist just outside the curriculum that are designed to tap students’ evolving interests and talents. Here’s a list of some of the activities we see student thrive at The Riviera Ridge School!

Visual Arts
From lower school projects exploring color and shape to sophisticated, multiphase middle school creations, Riviera Ridge students have a wide range of ways to express themselves. Student artwork is on full display at the annual Riviera Ridge Art Show and students also participate in the Museum of Natural History’s Annual Artwalk. -
Performing Arts
The Riviera Ridge School's young thespians learn theater skills, stage their own plays known for their quality and popularity, and attend local performances. Vocal and instrumental music begin in the early grades, and student ensembles hit the high notes at holiday concerts and other school events. -
School Trips
Beginning in 4th grade, all students take part in overnight outings (from one night to more than a week) that introduce them to new places and ideas while helping them form strong bonds with each other and with their teachers. Fall trips include a Zoo overnight (4th), Astro Camp (5th), Catalina Island Marine Institute-CIMI (6th), the Sierra Nevada mountains (7th). Eighth graders travel to Northern California. -
Programming, Robotics and Design Thinking
Eager inventors design, build and program computer-driven robots. Learn keyboarding, coding, and programming; how to build apps and websites; and other tech skills. Students engage in design-thinking strategies as they create things. What kinds of things? Everything from laser-cut World Series decorations to actual 3D printed shoes. Our annual Maker Fair showcases our program. -
Service Learning
Through thoughtful collaborative planning between students and teachers, students of all ages engage in a variety of community service opportunities. Students sell snow cones for emergency relief, hold food drives for the hungry, make visits to retirement homes, and engage in other projects to give back to the community. Our annual Chili Cook-off highlights and supports a charity chosen by our students. -
Spanish
California’s Spanish heritage surrounds us. Beginning with Kindergarten, we help children move toward fluency and appreciate the richness of Spanish and Latin American culture. -
Swimming
We’re the only school around with a pool, so we’re also the only school that offers swimming during P.E. and after school sports. -
Surfing
This is Santa Barbara. Shouldn’t kids have an opportunity to learn how to surf and learn about the evolution and history of surfing? We think so. -
Media Literacy
Students engage in the study and use of technology in both media literacy classes and through the integrated use of technology in core content classes. They develop skills in creative design, digital citizenship and media literacy.
